The Adult Theological Education Program
(ATEP)
Maryhill School of Theology
The ATEP consists of 15 courses, covering the main areas
of Theology and Scripture:
- Research Methodology 1 (Basic Research, Critical
Thinking)
- Research Methodology 2 (How to prepare a thesis
proposal)
- Old Testament 1 (Introduction and Pentateuch)
- Old Testament 2 (Prophets or Wisdom Literature)
- New Testament 1 (Introduction, Synoptic Gospels
and Acts)
- New Testament 2 (Paul or John)
- Fundamental Theology (Revelation and Faith)
- Christology and Trinity
- Theology of the Church
- Theological Anthropology (Creation and Grace or
Eschatology)
- Church History
- Fundamental Moral Theology
- Liturgy and Sacraments
- Justice and Liberation (including Social Teachings
of the Church)
- Introduction to Missiology (Theology of Mission,
Mission Praxis and History)
After finishing the required 15 courses, students pursuing
an MA in Religious Studies (academic degree) take the
comprehensive examinations, and then present a thesis
proposal, write the thesis and defend it in public.
Aside from these 15 courses, those who are pursuing
an MA in Pastoral Ministry (professional and non-thesis
degree) are required to take 3 of these pastoral ministry
courses ( BEC, Pastoral Counseling, Youth and Campus
Ministry, Developing Bible Seminars, Pastoral Liturgy,
Methods of Teaching Religion, Dialogue with Islam, etc.)
After which, they take the comprehensive examinations,
and then write a project paper on any pastoral practice
of their choice.
